Men in Dubai deal with acne scarring and enlarged pores in large numbers, but walk into a clinic for treatment far less often than women. Part of that is the perception that aesthetic treatments aren’t really aimed at them. Part of it is that a lot of the marketing for microneedling and skin treatments is built around female imagery.

The treatment itself doesn’t care. Acne scars are acne scars regardless of who has them, and SkinPen microneedling works the same way on male skin. The relevant differences for men are mostly practical — skin thickness, post-gym schedules, beard presence, and the higher average sun exposure that comes with outdoor work in the Gulf — and a good clinician accounts for all of them.

What SkinPen Is and Why It Gets Used for Men’s Skin

SkinPen is a medical-grade microneedling device with FDA clearance for the treatment of acne scars. It creates precise micro-channels using fine sterile needles set to a controlled depth, which triggers the skin’s collagen production without the ablation or heat that comes with laser treatments.

For men specifically, a few things matter here. Male facial skin tends to be thicker than female skin, which means the needle depth often needs to be set higher to reach the dermis effectively. The presence of beard follicles in the lower face also requires care around the angle and depth of treatment in that zone. Neither of these is a complication, but they’re reasons why someone treating male skin all day will approach a session differently than if they set the device the same way for everyone.

Because SkinPen doesn’t use heat at the surface, its PIH risk for darker skin is low when the protocol is set correctly. For the large proportion of Dubai men with South Asian, Arab, or East African skin, this matters. A lot of the acne-scarring options that work well on lighter skin are more complicated on Fitzpatrick IV–VI, but SkinPen at the right parameters is well-tolerated across those tones. For a fuller treatment of why darker skin needs a different approach, see Acne Scars on Darker Skin (Fitzpatrick IV–VI) in Dubai.

What It Actually Fixes

Acne scars of the rolling and shallow boxcar variety respond reasonably well to SkinPen over a series of sessions. The device reaches 0.5mm to 3mm in depth depending on setting, with deeper settings (around 2 to 2.5mm) targeting scar tissue in the dermis. Over four to six sessions, rolling scars flatten noticeably and boxcar margins soften. Ice-pick scars are more stubborn — their narrow, deep structure isn’t well-addressed by surface-level collagen stimulation alone, and they typically need a targeted approach like TCA Cross alongside the broader microneedling programme.

Enlarged pores appear to shrink over a course of treatment, though the mechanism is more about tissue tightening around the pore and improved collagen density in the surrounding dermis than any physical reduction in the pore itself. The result is real and consistent across patients with this concern.

Skin texture generally improves because the collagen rebuilding smooths minor surface irregularities. Men who’ve dealt with long-term post-acne roughness — not defined scars, just an uneven, dull texture — often find this is where the most noticeable change comes from over the first few sessions.

The Session Itself

A topical numbing cream is applied about 30 to 45 minutes before the session. Most men describe the sensation as tolerable pressure and a scratching feeling. Bony areas like the cheekbones can be more noticeable, but the numbing cream handles most of the discomfort.

The session takes 30 to 60 minutes depending on area size. The device passes over the skin at controlled depth, adjusted for different zones. The beard area gets specific attention to needle angle so follicles aren’t damaged. Deeper settings are used over scar tissue and thicker skin; lighter settings over thinner areas around the eyes and temples.

Immediately after, the skin looks red and slightly swollen, similar to moderate sunburn. This is normal and expected.

Recovery

The redness usually peaks on the first day and settles significantly by day two. A rough or slightly flaky texture can persist for a few days as the micro-channels close and the skin renews. Most men are comfortable returning to work the next day depending on what their job involves.

A few practical points for men:

Gym and heavy exercise: wait 48 hours. Sweating into freshly treated skin increases irritation and infection risk. The heat also extends redness.

Shaving: avoid the treated area for at least 48 hours, ideally 72. Running a blade over skin that’s still in active recovery isn’t comfortable and isn’t good for the healing process.

Sun exposure: SPF 50 every morning is required throughout the programme, not just immediately after sessions. In Dubai’s UV environment, skipping this undermines everything else.

How Many Sessions and How Often

Mild scarring and enlarged pores: three to four sessions spaced four to six weeks apart is usually enough to see meaningful change.

Moderate scarring across the cheeks or jawline: four to six sessions is more realistic. Progress photos taken in consistent lighting every two sessions are the most reliable way to track what’s actually moving.

Deeper or more complex scarring: six or more sessions, often combined with other treatments. The 3-Month Acne Scar Reset guide covers how SkinPen fits into a broader programme.

The four to six week spacing isn’t arbitrary. Collagen remodelling takes time, and the skin needs one complete healing cycle before the next session adds another stimulus. Compressing sessions gets worse results, not better ones.

SkinPen vs Hydrafacial for Men

These two get compared often because both are popular men’s skin treatments in Dubai. They aren’t competing for the same problem.

Hydrafacial is a surface cleansing treatment. It removes dead skin cells, extracts blackheads and congestion from pores, and delivers hydrating serums into the skin. It’s excellent for oily skin, congested pores, and a quick brightness improvement. Its effect on structural acne scarring is minimal.

SkinPen works on structure. It’s a collagen-building treatment that changes the architecture of scarred or textured skin over time. It doesn’t clean the surface the way Hydrafacial does.

The two work well together in sequence: Hydrafacial every four weeks to keep pores clear and skin hydrated, with SkinPen every eight to twelve weeks for the structural improvement work. More on the Hydrafacial side in Hydrafacial for Men in Dubai.

For concerns involving laxity or deeper tissue remodelling alongside scarring, Microneedling vs RF Skin Tightening in Dubai explains when the RF component is worth adding.
